Frequently asked questions:

Why did this book need to be written?

The Haitian people have suffered from a series of man-made and natural disasters over the past two decades — earthquakes, cholera, kidnappings, and anarchy. The real stories of people caught up in these disasters bring home the courage and resilience of the Haitian people in a way that dry statistics cannot capture. Haiti and its people are misunderstood and misinformation about Haiti abounds. With all its troubles, Haiti has fallen off our national radar screen. This book is intended to provide Americans of goodwill with the “inside story” of Haiti’s recent past and the heroes who have emerged from these struggles.

Who should read this book?

Students and teachers of global health and Latin American history, as well as people of goodwill who wish a better understanding of haiti's people and its recent past.

What will you do with the money you raise?

I donate all my royalties to charitable causes in Haiti. The proceeds from this book will support cost of living raises for community health workers of Project Medishare in Haiti’s central plateau, the expansion of community health workers and sickle cell screening programs around Cap Haitian and global health service-learning projects for medical students and faculty.

What are your future plans to raise funds for Haiti?

The stories told here are extremely visual. I'd like to sell the film/ video rights to these stories. In addition, I have two more books in the works- “Intern- life on the wards of a public hospital, 1973 1974,” Which compares medical training 50 years ago with now. It will be out this spring. I am still in the process of writing my 4th book, “Death Sentence- malpractice and neglect of the poor and mentally ill in our jails”.
